The damp, temperate climate of Asturias creates ideal conditions for our native forests and orchards, but it also allows aggressive fungal pathogens to thrive. For landowners managing timber, cider apple orchards, or historic estates, early detection is critical. Here is the ECS guide to the top six diseases affecting local woodland, along with their key symptoms and management options.
Chestnut Blight
Cryphonectria parasitica
Symptoms
Look for sunken, cracked bark cankers oozing orange/yellow fungal growth. A sudden wilting and browning of leaves occurs, and these dead leaves usually remain stuck to the branches.
Natural Treatment
Prune branches at least 30 cm below visible cankers, thoroughly sterilise tools with alcohol between cuts, and burn infected timber on-site. Hypovirulent biological control can be used in managed stands.
Chemical Treatment
No effective chemical cure exists; management is purely mechanical and sanitary.
Apple Scab
Venturia inaequalis
Symptoms
Velvety olive-green to black spots form on the leaves, while cider apples develop dark, corky scabs and severe cracking as they grow.
Natural Treatment
Rake and destroy leaf litter in autumn, prune canopies during winter to improve airflow, and use wettable sulphur sprays just as buds break.
Chemical Treatment
Preventative copper hydroxide/oxychloride or systemic fungicides applied precisely at spring bud break.
Pine Pitch Canker
Fusarium circinatum
Symptoms
Characterised by heavy resin bleeding from trunk cankers and rapid crown dieback, with pine needles turning reddish-brown. Spread primarily by bark beetles.
Natural Treatment
Rapid sanitisation felling and on-site burning or chipping to eliminate beetle habitat. Never transport infected timber off-site.
Chemical Treatment
None viable or permitted for mature stands; management relies entirely on strict sanitation and restricted timber movement.
Phytophthora Root Rot
Phytophthora spp. (Ink Disease)
Symptoms
Trees show stunted foliage, poor vigour, and black, oozing lesions at the root collar and lower trunk. Highly common in chestnuts and apple trees in waterlogged soils.
Natural Treatment
Improve site drainage, avoid standing water at the trunk base, and inoculate the soil with beneficial Trichoderma fungi to outcompete the pathogen.
Chemical Treatment
Targeted potassium phosphite trunk injections or soil drenches to boost internal plant defences.
Ash Dieback
Hymenoscyphus fraxineus
Symptoms
Causes blackened, wilted foliage and distinctive diamond-shaped bark lesions at branch junctions, leading to extensive crown dieback.
Natural Treatment
Clear fallen leaves in autumn to cut the local spore load. Crucially, leave non-hazardous infected trees standing to identify and preserve naturally tolerant genetic stock.
Chemical Treatment
No practical chemical treatments are available.
Dutch Elm Disease
Ophiostoma novo-ulmi
Symptoms
Look for "flagging" (isolated high branches wilting and yellowing in mid-summer) and complex beetle gallery networks carved under the dead bark.
Natural Treatment
Immediate sanitisation felling and burning to destroy breeding sites for vector bark beetles. Replant using certified resistant native elm clones.
Chemical Treatment
Preventative micro-injections of systemic fungicides (e.g., propiconazole) into the root flare for high-value specimen trees.
Specialist Tree Felling & Land Clearing
