Mastering the Art of Natural Renders: From Traditional Lime to Pioneering Insulated Finishes

At ECS, our fabric-first approach to building restoration has always been rooted in practical, proven methods rather than industry greenwashing. For over 30 years, we have honed our craft by working extensively with traditional hot-lime and cold-slaked renders. We believe in breathable, natural materials that actively protect and preserve a building’s structure while standing the test of time.

As building regulations have tightened over the last decade, so too has our application of these time-tested materials. For the past 10 years, we have focused on lime-based insulated renders to meet modern thermal demands without compromising a building’s natural vapour permeability. A significant part of this journey has involved working with Diasen and their exceptional cork-based formulations. Using products like Diasen Diathonite, we have been able to deliver highly effective thermal and acoustic insulation, coupled with outstanding salt-blocking capabilities. Never content with standard applications, we also pioneered the technique of polishing these cork-based renders to achieve a uniquely refined, high-end finish.

However, our commitment to developing no-nonsense, high-performance solutions hasn’t stopped there. Over the past six years, we have been rigorously experimenting with cold slaked hemp, clay, and lime blends. By putting these materials to the test in real-world conditions—including within our own living laboratory in Western Asturias—we have perfected a mixture that offers exceptional structural and environmental benefits.

Today, we are proud to announce that we are bringing our very first proprietary natural renders to the market. Formulated from decades of hands-on experience, these new cold slaked hemp, clay, and lime renders provide a superior, breathable finish. Staying true to the signature techniques we developed over the years, these new renders can also be fully polished, offering our clients a flawless, sustainable, and highly durable aesthetic.
